The Whitewater River is the primary watercourse draining the south and east sides of the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Its frothing waters tumble down the mountain and rush across the desert before sinking into the sands near Palm Springs. The Wildlands Conservancy acquired the historic Whitewater Trout Farm in 2006 to prevent it from becoming a housing development. The canyon and many others are now within the Sand to Snow National Monument designated by President Barack Obama in 2016, and Whitewater Preserve is one of the best places to experience the desert glory of the monument. This trip explores a short stretch of the canyon, brie?y joins the Paci?c Crest Trail (PCT), and follows a ridge with good views before returning to the canyon.
