This long route in the Marin Headlands serves up an intriguing mix of grand views, challenging terrain, and twentieth-century military installations to explore. What makes the Marin Headlands so appealing to hikers also made them appealing to the military. When the fog is out, views across the Pacific are endless and unimpeded, perfect for watching a sunset or for scouting the approach of enemy ships. The shoreline is mined with rocks and endlessly slapped by dangerous surf, rendering it both inaccessible and ruggedly lovely. And the slopes are so challenging that only clever trail-building has rendered them manageable on foot; an enemy fighter would have battled harsh inclines and biting brambles to approach any of the military emplacements above.
