If you really want to hike the Appalachian Mountains, you need to start at Flagg Mountain, which, at 1,152 feet above sea level, is the chain’s southernmost peak. This introductory hike offers great views and modest climbs up and down the draws on the mountain’s flanks. On the summit itself, you can see the remains of what was to be a state park, including a stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression. You also see the surrounding country: the foothills falling off to the coastal plain and the mountains, including Cheaha, the state’s highest peak, rising in the northeast.
