Everyone needs to make a pilgrimage to the highest point in Alabama: Mount Cheaha’s peak, in Cheaha State Park. Climb the stone observation tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, for a 360-degree view. Take advantage of short hikes to Pulpit Rock or Bald Rock to get to mountain’s edge. It can be crowded, but it’s worth it to see the fall leaves. Head to the mountains and cool off in the summer. A nice intro to the outdoors, the state park can also be a staging ground for more hiking and waterfall pilgrimages in the surrounding Talladega National Forest and Cheaha Wilderness.
