With its mix of history and nature, Tannehill is a great place for a quick getaway. This loop begins at the Alabama Museum of Iron and Steel and proceeds to the historic furnace site. It then wanders the woods along historic pathways, with stops at the intersection of three counties, a slave cemetery, and a replica of a 19th-century gristmill. Some weekends you really can still hear the blacksmith’s hammer ringing at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, the birthplace of the iron-and-steel industry in Greater Birmingham. The centerpiece of the park is a massive restored furnace where pig iron was produced for the Confederacy until Union soldiers swept through and destroyed it in 1865. Earlier ironworking history on the site traces back to the 1830s. The park also hosts a collection of 19th-century buildings, from cabins to cotton gins, brought here from all over central Alabama.
