Have you ever wanted to try bicycle camping? If the answer is “Yes,” you’ll want to try this easy route that takes you through the Crooked River National Grassland and drops you off at Haystack Reservoir Campground. After you set up camp, take a swim and soak in views of the unique central Oregon high desert. Trail surface: Doubletrack and paved road. Established in 1962, the 111,352-acre Crooked River National Grassland is filled with rolling plateaus of sagebrush, juniper trees, basalt rimrock, rounded buttes, and steep gorges. The dry, open landscape here is a perfect habitat for a variety of raptors and other wildlife, including pronghorn antelope, mule deer, jackrabbits, and coyotes. Long before mountain bikes rolled through these grassy hills and plains, homesteaders populated them with grazing livestock. At the turn of the century, ranching and farming were the primary industries in this part of Oregon.
