A coyote traverses the beach in the distance, shorebirds call as they busily poke the sand for food, red-winged blackbirds sing love songs along the reedy shore. The joys of nature are a bicycle length away on the pleasant international cruise, a popular ride among members of the Vancouver Bicycle Club. Plan to visit the Reifel Wildlife Sanctuary. It sustains the largest population of wintering waterfowl in Canada. Birds arrive in August, and their numbers reach a peak by November. May and June are the best times to see the ducklings and goslings of the year-round residents. If you can't hike the paths under the wings of raptors and snow geese, you might catch a glimpse of the pet sandhill crane standing several feet tall at the sanctuary entrance or view mallards and sandpipers nearby. Terrain: mostly flat delta farmland. Some minor hills, especially at Point Roberts, at 17.2 miles; Clarks Store at 21.2 miles, and many options in Tsawwassen at 25 miles.
