This passage offers a classic northern Arizona experience, with long stretches of beautiful ponderosa pine forest, prime elk habitat, and tantalizing views of the Grand Canyon. This relatively flat stretch has abundant campsites. While it has little fresh water, the frequent tanks and ponds may be promising. As you head northwest along the Coconino Rim, some of the drainages dropping to the northeast may contain water. However, you will find water only in the upper reaches of these valleys if the ground is saturated from winter snowmelt or recent rainfall. Carsonite posts bearing the Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT) symbol frequently mark this trail.
