This loop is a true classic of southwestern New Mexico. The Gila Inner Loop Scenic Byway includes some of best scenery in this corner of the state—sandstone cliffs, dense ponderosa pine forest, rivers, rugged canyons, and mountain ranges. High above the desert country, you will be surrounded by national forest, riding through the country’s first designated wilderness and crossing the Continental Divide twice. Gila National Forest covers 3.3 million acres and a quarter of that is designated wilderness. The loop drive connects Silver City, Pinos Altos, Sapillo Springs, Lake Roberts, and the Upper Mimbres Valley, with a side trip to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. It is popular with recreational cyclists, touring companies, and cycling clubs; and it is part of the Tour of the Gila, New Mexico’s premier stage race. Spend a day or two or three cycling this scenic byway. Terrain: Winding, mountainous roads include steep grades, fast descents, and sections of flat to rolling terrain; more than 5,000 feet of climbing.
