New Mexico Route 3 is a quiet, rural, and historic road in the southern part of what locals refer to as El Valle, and it is worth a day trip or overnighter if you aren’t afraid of dogs. The ride follows the course of the Pecos River, starting at a funky cafe, passing a winery with a tasting room in an old restored farmhouse, and ending at a state park with neat, adobe-style shelters for camping. You will ride through juniper-pinon hills and alongside red sandstone bluffs as you leave and come back to the banks of the river several times. In addition, the route passes through several old Spanish villages with historic churches. Terrain: Gentle descent and easy return climb along the Pecos River-plus a few rollers.
