This out-and-back is a favorite with the New Mexico Touring Society, an annual outing they call the El Morro Picnic Ride. Their Web site describes it as a “delightful tour” because it’s moderate and scenic—it’s that and a whole lot more. You will cycle through a strange badlands, a massive lava flow south of Grants now preserved as El Malpais National Monument; and at the turn-around point—El Morro National Monument—you can explore the historic carvings along Inscription Rock and the ruins of two Anasazi pueblos. Other highlights include the privately owned Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano. This moderate ride has a short climb to the Continental Divide at 7,882 feet. Terrain: Easy to moderate terrain with one short climb to the Continental Divide.
