The Jemez Mountain Trail has it all—history, culture, recreation, and outstanding scenery. This national scenic byway is known as one of the most spectacular drives in the state—and it’s even better on a bike. Along the way you can picnic, swim, sightsee, and visit some ancient ruins. The final destination—a soak in the healing waters at Jemez Springs Bath House. The route cuts through the Jemez Mountains, a range where the earth is still warm. The mountains and canyons were formed by volcanic explosions millions of years ago. There are waterfalls, hot springs, unusual geologic formations, a huge caldera, and more. You can plan your bike trip as a short out-and-back between recreation sites, as an all-day adventure with lunch in Jemez Springs, or as a leisurely overnighter. Terrain: Mountainous terrain with some steep sections. Gradual climbing most of the way back.
