Credit for the contribution of this loop in New Mexico’s Four Corners Region goes to David Ortiz, a local cyclist and outdoor enthusiast. This loop travels through the La Plata and Animas river valleys, which were occupied by the Anasazi, or Ancient Ones, until around 1300. Remnants of their culture are left in this corner of the state in the form of ruins—some buried underneath New Mexico Route 170, the first leg of the ride, and others visible at the Aztec Ruins National Monument, a side trip of about a mile. You’ll enjoy rolling through high-desert mesas and green farmland with distant views of Colorado’s rugged San Juan Mountains along the route. The terrain includes flat straight-aways and short inclines, and you’ll encounter moderate uphill pulls as you approach Aztec. This ride is located in the desert highlands of the Four Corners and begins at San Juan College. You’ll head west through the Glade Canyon before reaching New Mexico Route 170, locally known as La Plata Highway. The highway meanders through La Plata River valley with good views north of La Plata Mountains, the southwestern end of the San Juans. This range is the source of the creek in the valley bottom. La Plata River has good brown trout fishing in the spring. Terrain: Flat to rolling with two hill climbs around Farmington Glade.
