If you’re an angler, this long near-loop trail is for you. Cutting directly into the granitic, lake-speckled heart of the western Emigrant Basin, hardly a mile along this easy route fails to present a lake or a stream stocked with fighting, delectable trout. The trail’s destination, Deer Lake, possibly has more good fishing within a two-hour walk than any other spot in the entire Sierra. Our out-bound leg is the historic western portion of the difficult Emigrant Pass wagon trail, which brought intrepid gold seekers to the Sonora mines over 140 years ago. Today, it is by far the most pleasant and scenic westside avenue into the Emigrant Basin’s heart. The return path, via the easy Crabtree Trail, passes still more lakes, views, and meadows.
