There is a lot of wilderness to the west of Kings Canyon National Park. The North Fork Kings River was not granted National Park status because this drainage was coveted by the logging and grazing industries. And for good reason: the lower elevations contain cathedral forests of towering conifers while the higher elevations support a vast wonderland of subalpine meadows. Most of this area is now within the John Muir Wilderness where logging is prohibited and grazing has been reduced. This beautiful trip passes through some of these meadowy flower gardens, and Rae Lake provides easy access to many out-of-the-way lake basins west of the LeConte Divide.
