Located on West Mesa; about 15 miles west of Albuquerque. This is the easier of the two loops at Petroglyph National Monument. It is worth riding the loops together as a big "figure 8." The area is part of Petroglyph National Monument and offers mountain bikers some fun exploring on old dirt roads. It is nearly impossible to get lost out there. Just take whatever trail looks interesting and keep your eyes on the volcanoes. You will ride through open grassland with sagebrush, yucca, prickly pear, cholla, and saltbrush. Sections of trail narrow to singletrack and several climbs have technical moves. I highly recommend a late afternoon ride. Highlights include views of the city lights and spectacular sunsets over Mount Taylor. If possible, take a ride out to the mesa during the famous Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and enjoy a great vantage point. Petroglyph National Monument is known for its prehistoric rock art, some 15,000 images scratched on the basalt rocks. These symbols had spiritual and cultural significance to the early inhabitants along the Rio Grande. 2 miles on doubletrack and 2 miles on dirt road.
