Located along the Rio Grande; about 5 miles south of Albuquerque. South Valley Canal Road is the quickest way to get out of the city and explore the countryside, although most mountain bikers would consider this ride boring. You won't ride alongside the river or through the cottonwoods like at Corrales Bosque; rather, you will parallel the clear ditch and can still enjoy the shade (afternoon), the waterfowl (winter is best), and the views east toward the Sandias (on the way back). The Rio Grande Valley State Park runs for 25 miles along both sides of the river from Sandia Pueblo to Isleta Pueblo. The main goal of the park is to preserve the special habitat called a bosque, which is located in the floodplain of the river. For more information on this unique environment, see Corrales Bosque, which is also part of the state park. Note: This ride is just one of several access points to the dirt and paved trails in the park. Albuquerque Open Space puts out a trail map of the entire area. 7.2 miles on doubletrack and 2.8 miles on pavement. The additional miles are doubletrack.
