The Foothills Trail System, which borders the Sandia Mountain Wilderness, is the result of the hard work of many individuals and organizations. Albuquerque Open Space, along with the Forest Service, secured a large portion of the western foothills of the Sandias to be preserved as a multi-use area. In addition to this trail, the system includes South Foothills Trail, a few miles south of Embudito. Both areas offer an up-close look at the rugged granite peaks of the Sandias, as well as views west of the city and the Rio Grande Valley. You'll ride through juniper and pinyon and interesting large boulder fields. The Foothills Trail System is extremely popular due to the good riding conditions and its close proximity to the city. Expect the trails to be crowded during peak hours and on weekends. Much of the singletrack is hard-packed and smooth so you can ride fast except for a few climbs. Be prepared for some wet crossings in the spring. Once you try this loop, consult the map to create your own route using the alternate side trails.
