Located on the northeastern slope of the Sandias near the town of Pacitas; about 25 miles northeast of Albuquerque. You will follow Las Huertas Creek for most of the ride, pass alongside the limestone cliff bands of Palomas Peak, and as you gain elevation, enjoy spectacular views to the east. Look closely to see the walkway that leads to Sandia Man Cave, a National Historic Landmark and one of most important archeological sites in the country. After your 2,600-foot climb, relax under the ponderosa pines at Balsam Grove Picnic Area and get ready for a fast descent back to your car. By the way, sandia means watermelon in Spanish. Note: Use caution descending FR 16 because of occasional car traffic. 15 miles on dirt road.
