This course passes through the wide, open spaces of west Texas. With only a cursory glance, this countryside may strike you as plain and repetitive. Look closely, though, and you'll be surprised at the variety of life supported here. The full tour passes through prime grazing land, a huge country feedlot, a national wildlife refuge, and the unique habitat of Prairie Dog Town, an undisturbed stretch of habitat for these unusual animals. Be prepared for steady winds. Terrain: lots of flat, open, west Texas space. Some rolling hills through the Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge and on Soucy Rd. on the return to Canyon. Road: FM roads are two lanes, no shoulder, and lightly traveled. Roads to the north of Canyon have more traffic than those to the south, some of which are quite isolated. If you choose the shorter options, US 60 has high-speed traffic but a wide shoulder.
