This ride is a great tour of some of the Sacramento Mountains’ prettiest country. At the highest point you will be cruising through conifer forests common to an alpine environment. These deep piney forests intermittently reveal grassy gullies and meadows crossed by streams and laced with wildflowers. The route that takes you down La Luz Canyon is a 15.4-mile loop that will be moderate to strenuous for beginning and intermediate riders in good to excellent physical condition. This ride includes 5 miles of pavement, but consists mostly of hard-packed dirt roads in good condition, with sections that are washboarded and periodically washed out due to heavy rain or runoff. Allow three hours to complete the ride. This route should be dry and free of snow by midspring, and ridable until snow returns again in November. Be aware of weather forecasts and hunting season schedules for this area; getting caught in a lightning storm or a hail of hunters’ bullets can really put a damper on your ride. Be wary of vehicle traffic while riding US 82.
