This ride serves as a good introduction to the town of Silver City, giving a feel for the history and surrounding country. The mine came to life around the turn of the century, producing modest amounts of gold and silver. The Cleveland Mill, which processed the ore from the Cleveland Mine, was a Superfund cleanup site. On your way to the mine, you pass the mill site on your right. The concrete footings are still here; the area is stained orange and smells of sulfur. The smooth open slope to the left is where more of the contaminated soil was buried in 1998.
