Corrales Bosque is a cool, peaceful, and really beautiful deciduous forest along the banks of the “big river.” The preserve gives an intimate look at an unusual riparian habitat that used to range all along the Rio Grande. The dominant tree of this river woodland is the Rio Grande cottonwood, which depends upon intermittent flooding to germinate and disperse its seeds. At one time the bosque almost entirely disappeared due to wood harvesting and farming. A devastating flood in 1904 wiped out the remaining bosque as well as an enormous amount of farmland. Silt and sand raised the level of the floodplain and made conditions ripe for the bosque to make a comeback. Once again the bosque became a healthy habitat for a variety of waterfowl, more than 260 species of birds, raccoons, gray foxes, muskrats, beavers, and bobcats. To learn more about the riparian woodlands of the Rio Grande visit the Rio Grande Nature Center located on the east side of the river just north of I-40 off Rio Grande Boulevard and Candelaria Street.
