This is some rough country, characterized by steeply eroded canyons with large boulders and formations of volcanic tuff. Ponderosa forests thrive at these elevations and in this sandy soil—you’ll see them everywhere. This is a fun ride right out of Los Alamos. The ride around Guaje Mountain, on the eastern slope of the Jemez Mountains, is a 13.1-mile loop. Intermediate and advanced riders will find that several of the steep, loose sections will make this ride moderately difficult to strenuous. Besides sections of pavement and hard-packed dirt roads, you can expect to encounter a couple of rocky descents.
