This ride begins on CR 42, just to the west and north of Bandera Crater, on the Continental Divide. CR 42 provides access to some of the best sights in the monument, including Big Lava Tubes, the Braided Cave, and Chain of Craters. Be sure to stop in at the visitor center in Grants to find out more about these formations and where they are located. For the first 2 miles you will be riding right on the divide through healthy groves of aspen. On the west side of the divide, water drains into the Pacific; on the east side of the divide, water drains into the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. To the east of the road, you’ll see the lava that flowed from Bandera Crater, which was responsible for one of the youngest flows within the monument. At the easternmost point in this loop, you will find the Big Lava Tubes Area. A cairned trail leads to Big Skylight and Four Windows—caves that were created by molten lava flowing though tubes of rock that cooled around it. You will need flashlights and sturdy hiking boots to explore these caves.
