With beautiful scenery, long climbs, and face-peeling descents, this hilly half century has everything you’re looking for, and lots of it. Left Hand Canyon is one of the classic hill climbs on the Front Range. The descent on Sugarloaf Road serves up a late plot twist, just to keep things interesting. Terrain: Classic Front Range. One very long, moderate canyon climb that gets progressively steeper toward the top. Gentle rollers on the Peak-to-Peak Highway. What has gone up, then, must come down. Traffic and hazards: Well-traveled roads. Shoulders and road surfaces are generally adequate. Motorists are used to seeing lots of cyclists on this route. Dirt alert: Note that the top of Sugarloaf Road is fairly rough dirt for a few miles. Even if you hate dirt, don’t let this stop you from trying this ride—just continue into Nederland and descend to Boulder on Highway 119 instead.
