This ride climbs one of the toughest hills west of Boulder, and that’s really saying something. Although touring some of the most scenic terrain on the Front Range, this loop is most highly recommended for those who want a punishing workout in a short ride. A long dirt road section further separates the wheat from the chaff. Delicate constitutions and frou-frou wheelsets will not be helpful. Terrain: This baby is a no-nonsense climber’s loop. Although much of the climbing is moderate at best, Captain Gravity makes up for it by dishing out major suffering in one long, continuous helping below Gold Hill, then rewards with a sweet descent. Traffic and hazards: The bike path up Boulder Canyon, with its blind corners and moving obstacles, is probably the sketchiest part of the ride. Traffic is moderate in Four Mile Canyon and slight on the road to Gold Hill. Sunshine Canyon invites disaster with its speedy descent—expect drunk and distracted drivers to meet you on the way up.
