Enjoy some of the finest views on the Front Range on this short, moderate climb to the campus of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Terrain: One continuous hill climb, moderate. Traffic and hazards: The descent has the potential for dangerous speed. Traffic is slight once the road leaves the built-up area. When you get on a bike and ride up the big curl of a road leading to NCAR, you are riding on a work of functional art.And that’s not just something cute to say; it’s really true. The layout of the road was designed by the architect I. M. Pei in the 1960s as part of his larger plan for the scientific campus on the mesa. The road is deliberately indirect and lengthy on its way to the complex, a design feature that Pei hoped would add drama to the approach and impart a sense of significance to the whole enterprise.
