A Front Range classic in a small package, this loop into the first stand of mountains southwest of Denver is strenuous, popular, and gorgeous. Terrain: The primary feature of this ride is a long, moderate-to-difficult climb. This is followed by rolling terrain and a long descent interrupted by a sharp half-mile climb. Traffic and hazards: Deer Creek Canyon is a well-used route for commuters in a god-awful hurry to get home. Avoid rush hours, if possible. But this is a very popular bike route with generally good-natured motorists and ordinary surface hazards (ordinary except for the occasional rattlesnake at the bottom of Deer Creek Canyon).
