The North Lone Pine Trail is predominantly used by hikers and horseback riders. But owing to the trail’s relatively smooth singletrack, which runs underneath a thick canopy of green for its entire length, North Lone Pine offers us “velocipedestrians” one sweet ride. While the entire North Lone Pine Trail continues along the east side of Middle Bald Mountain, at 10,700 feet the second highest of the three bald peaks in the area, this trail description concerns itself only with the lower half of the North Lone Pine Trail. The upper half isn’t particularly suited for mountain biking, as there are a number of places where you would have to hike-a-bike. While mostly hidden by dense, lodgepole pine and aspen forests, the trail does open up near its end to offer easterly views of Red Feather Lakes village. Recreational campers, four-wheelers, and hunters regularly use all the Forest Service roads listed in this description, so be careful as you ride.
