Relative to many of the rides in the Missoula vicinity and Bitterroot Valley, the challenging Grizzly Creek Trail is a remote getaway where encounters with other trail users (outside hunting season) are extremely infrequent. The ride cuts up a wooded hillside away from the blue-ribbon trout stream Rock Creek, intersecting several times with Grizzly Creek. It eventually connects atop the Sapphire Mountain ridgeline with a network of Forest Service roads and trails in various states of maintenance, making this route a reasonable starting place for exploring a region rich in wildlife that also provides a change in scenery from many of the other rides discussed. A campsite at the start and area trails make this a worthwhile overnight if you have time. If you head south on the logging road at the ridge, a mountaintop spring a little more than another 4 miles away provides an additional turnaround point. Tread: Singletrack.
