When I was first informed that folks tackle this popular, scenic hiking trail on their bikes, I was in disbelief. Despite having been burned by the massive forest fires of 2000, the trail offers glimpses of high cliff walls (often enjoyed by rock climbers) and follows the route of a classic Bitterroot trout stream (enjoyed by anglers). After the first couple of miles, however, the trail gets so technical that only the most skilled riders will want to try. Beyond the pack bridge nearly 4 miles in—an excellent turnaround point for you mortals—the trail leads to the wilderness boundary at 7 miles (bikes prohibited beyond this point). The boulder-strewn trail offers the most technical riding that I tackled in the course of riding for this book. There are riders who will enjoy the sheer challenge of this trail, especially those with full-suspension who find the other rides herein too wimpy. The rest of you have been warned. Tread: Singletrack.
