Spring Creek Pass, tucked away on the lonely stretch of highway between Creede and Lake City, provides a pleasant opportunity for all but the most timid cyclists. Launching directly from the rest area on top of the modest pass, this route stair-steps up flowing terrain to the magical Jarosa Mesa, via doubletrack that is occasionally fast and smooth but is primarily festooned with buffed-out rock gardens. With the exception of one little bit of steep walking (about 30 steps), all the climbs are moderate in severity, as is the overall sense of the physical effort required for this rideā€”the loose, steep section that rises from the parking area is not representative of what lies beyond. Riding a bike up onto the bright Jarosa Mesa, with its backcountry aura and ethereal views, tends to give the impression that one has gained a lot from relatively little effort. This is a rare sensation in the steep San Juans and should be savored. Trail Surface: Doubletrack.
