Far above Telluride, in a gorgeous array of alpine basins, huge drifts of pure white snow begin to melt, sending thousands of rivulets into dozens of brooks and creeks, which drop in crystal waterfall formation over gray cliffs, meeting at the valley floor to become the San Miguel River. The San Miguel then chugs through a gauntlet of mine tailings and various industrial refuse on its way to Telluride, where it picks up the usual baggage associated with neo-booming tourist towns: sewage, detergent, real estate flyers, empty bottles of Patron and Fat Tire Ale. By the time it reaches Vanadium, a crossroads named for the radioactive metal that was extracted from these hills and used in nuclear warheads, the San Miguel is one abused, pissed-off waterway. The San Miguel is able to fully perform most of its other stream duties, including soaking the feet of weary travelers and gurgling pleasantly. The river does so well, in fact, that you may forget entirely about the highway that hums with traffic over your shoulder, the tops of trucks barely visible above the embankment.
