Here is an 18.6-mile loop that feels more like 40, but you just might love it. This route climbs out of the San Miguel Valley on Last Dollar Road to an adventurous singletrack trail that traverses the steep slopes at the base of Mount Sneffels. This upper (western) section of the Deep Creek Trail is seldom attempted by two-wheeled travelers, as opposed to the heavily traveled and highly manageable section of the same trail that lies east of Mill Creek Road. Stay positive with the knowledge that walking allows you to become more intimate with this top-notch corner of the world. In a setting of unreal beauty, you see, hear, and smell more, and sneak up on more animals than you would otherwise. Also, a tough, long walking section is a natural barrier that keeps all but the heartiest individuals away from the nice segments beyond, eliminating the need for razor wire and landmines. When you’re finally up there, cruising on some rollers, glimpsing snow-covered peaks through the aspens, it belongs to you alone. Trail Surface: 70% singletrack, 10% paved bike path, 10% dirt road or doubletrack, and 10% paved road.
