This challenging loop—on singletrack, dirt road, and highway east of Pagosa Springs—rewards hard work, then keeps on rewarding. By “hard work” I mean a terribly difficult climb to Windy Pass. This three-mile ascent is ultra-technical and largely unrideable for the average cyclist. After summiting the modest pass, however, you’ll find shockingly smooth singletrack descending pleasantly for more than five miles to the East Fork of the San Juan River. In the end, the surprising cruise down the back side of Windy Pass more than makes up for the hardship of the ascent. Windy Pass is only three miles above the highway, but these are some of the longest, slowest miles you’re likely to tackle on a bike. On a thin, loamy trail, riders face an endless lineup of gnarled root beds, with tall, slick, root-topped ledges. Imposing upon the remaining available surface area are fixed rocks and loose chunks churned out of the black earth by struggling horses. Roots and Rocks. These are the same obstacles you would find on any trail around these parts, but the overwhelming concentration of technical flak on this one is frustrating. Trail Surface: 45% singletrack, 30% dirt road, and 25% highway.
