Jones Creek, Dutch Creek, Hermosa. Just mentioning the names gets the juice flowing. Using the inhospitable Pinkerton-Flagstaff Trail as a connector, this loop connects all three classic, Durango-area trails into a challenging miniepic. Feint-hearted souls should save themselves the trouble of even embarking on this quite difficult but rewarding singletrack adventure through the foothills of the La Plata Mountains. Enjoy the first leg of this route, on a trail that’s often mentioned as a favorite among two-wheeled townies. The Jones Creek Trail often gives the impression that it was designed for cycling (which it was not). The general feel of Jones Creek is moderate, steady climbing on smooth trail, although there are more than a few steeps and techno root problems along the way. The four-mile stretch is bound to beat you down to some degree. My advice is to take it easy on Jones Creek, save your energy for the somewhat harsh Pinkerton-Flagstaff connector. Trail Surface: 100% singletrack.
