It has become somewhat of a tradition to experience the ethereal Hermosa Creek singletrack by shuttling to the trail’s northern trailhead, west of the Purgatory Ski Area. From the north end, a five-mile runway of rocky, riverside widetrack leads to the curvy singletrack, which thereafter loses about 1,000 feet of elevation (with a few significant climbs thrown in) on the way to its southern terminus near the village of Hermosa. This popular one-way route allows intermediate and novice riders to enjoy the entire length of trail without killing themselves. In my humble opinion, however, a better time can be had with an out-and-back from the southern trailhead. This makes for a longer and more adventurous ride, and, as such, riders will probably need a pile of food as well as water filters or iodine pills.
