Lime Creek Road is best ridden as a shuttle. That’s a little hard for me to admit, because I’ve never been a huge fan of shuttles. You know: shuttles double the driving, the gas, the pollution, and all the other sniveling car-related hassles. But this pleasant ride along a surviving portion of the old Durango-Silverton stage road really lends itself to the shuttle approach, especially for beginning riders. The length of the road, 11.4 miles one way, is plenty for most folks. Also consider that riding Lime Creek Road both ways, in the out-and-back format, triples the total elevation gain. The one-way shuttle is mostly downhill, but it’s not necessarily easy, as some recent guidebooks have suggested. There is a significant climb from around mile 5.9 to mile 7.6, gaining 500-plus feet. It’s not a killer, but you are guaranteed to feel this climb. Trail Surface: 100% dirt road.
