Sadly, even with hundreds of billions of miles of prime dirt snaking away from your back door, there are days when all you have time for is a short ride. An hour, maybe two, then it’s back to the mundane responsibilities of everyday life—so I’ve been told anyway. That’s where the Stevens Creek Mini Loop comes in. Fit this little loop into your after-dinner plans, and it will put a smile on your face before the sun has a chance to set behind the La Plata foothills. This loop is short, but it’s not necessarily easy. The ride begins with nearly four miles of steady climbing on Missionary Ridge Road. This climb will seem somewhat relentless to some, but it is in no way technical. The extremely wide and smooth road ascends the eastern wall of the Animas Valley, and the cross-valley northwesterly views, as well as the look straight down into the valley floor, are pretty excellent, especially as the sun sets. Trail Surface: 50% dirt road, 45% singletrack, and 5% paved road.
