This out-and-back mini-adventure opens with a two-mile grunt up moderately chunky jeep road. The initial climb hurts quite a bit less when you consider it’s the quickest way to access the Missionary Ridge Trail, a loveable but demanding stretch of rustic singletrack waiting quietly for you on top of the ridge. Missionary Ridge is a joyous celebration of singletrack. The trail dips and dives along the bumpy ridgetop, spilling over the edges, carving through meadows and lush aspen groves. Breaking up the fast, smooth sections are water bars, rock gardens, a handful of mudbogs and fallen trees, and a few tight switchbacks, one of which is very difficult and claims its share of victims. Also, there are lots of moderate climbs that need to be reckoned with, in both directions all along the ridge. This isn’t really a climber’s trail, but you need to be in shape to stylishly conquer the waves. After about 3.5 miles of tight singletrack, there is a technical segment that includes a steep walk-down and some serious off-camber ledges. Trail Surface: 80% singletrack and 20% 4WD road.
