The route starts in the ski resort of Mount Crested Butte and follows a well-maintained gravel road to Gothic and on to the summit of Schofield Pass beyond Emerald Lake. The low, wooded summit does not offer the views that are associated with most pass summits. The road to the pass is suitable for a passenger car. From that point on until about two miles out of Marble, stream crossings and rocky sections necessitate a high-clearance vehicle. Special Attractions: Famous and dangerous 4WD trail along an old stagecoach route; Historic mill on Crystal River; Ghost towns of Gothic and Crystal and town site of Schofield; Can be combined with South-Central Trail: Kebler Pass Road to form a loop. This trail is for experienced four-wheel drivers only. It is potentially dangerous, with large rocks, ruts, or terraces that may need to be negotiated. It may also have stream crossings at least 18 inches deep, involve rapid currents, unstable stream bottoms, or difficult access; steep slopes, loose surfaces, and narrow clearances; or very narrow sections of shelf road with steep drop-offs and potentially challenging road surfaces.
