The route commences in Silverton and follows US 550, the Million Dollar Highway, south for twenty-one miles to the Purgatory ski resort. The route passes through the resort and its network of paved roads without signs to guide you. An unpaved road exits the resort area and travels through the winter ski runs. Numerous camping spots with good creek access lie off the road for about ten miles from the Purgatory ski resort. Special Attractions: Attractive stream valley through the Purgatory ski area; Historic mining area of special significance in the effort to develop the first atomic bomb during World War II. High-clearance vehicles are preferred, but not necessary. This trail is dirt roads, but may have rocks, grades, water crossings, or ruts that make clearance a concern in a normal passenger vehicle. The trail is fairly wide, so that passing is possible at almost any point along the trail. Mud is not a concern under normal weather conditions.
