Yankee Boy Basin is a very popular location during the peak summer months for both sightseers and hikers. It provides a short, varied 4WD trail that is a good introduction to four-wheel driving. It offers rugged scenery, historic mines, deserted town sites, and wonderful natural beauty, including alpine meadows that are covered with wildflowers in the late spring. Special Attractions: Historic mines and old mining camps; Canyon Creek shelf road; Abundant wildflowers in Yankee Boy Basin. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs.
