The Shelf Road is a historic stagecoach toll road that connects Canon City with the gold mining camps of Cripple Creek and Victor. The Shelf travels precipitously along the limestone cliffs of Helena Canyon and then descends into the canyon, revealing incredibly tall red rock walls. Here is a mellow ride that offers a log of spinning. It's a cool ride to combine with a day of gambling in Cripple Creek. The Banks-Shelf Road area is also world-renowned for its rock climbing. For those who want something a little more laid-back than Cripple Creek, make tracks to Victor, a traditional turn-of-the century mining town that doesn't allow gambling. Bighorn sheep abound within Helena Canyon and most often can be spotted drinking from Fourmile Creek at dusk. Helena Canyon is a "hard hat" zone, meaning: loose rock will occasionally give in to gravity. The return from Cripple Creek or Victor is fast, offering a number of blind curves and washboard sections of road, with the last push to the Banks-Shelf Road parking area one burley climb. Terrain: Shelf Road Trail follows an old wagon and stagecoach toll road; aside from the occasional washboard effect, the road is relatively smooth; at times it is very exposed.
