Any city that wants to lower its dependence on the automobile and encourage greener ways to get around should look to Colorado Springs for inspiration. This system allows bikers to flow throughout the city on safe, pleasant trails. The main artery of this system is Pikes Peak Greenway. Tread: Urban trail. The main “spine” routes are 12-foot wide concrete and asphalt surfaces with 2- to 4-foot soft shoulders separated by landscaped buffer zone. The city calls these Tier 1 trails. Tier 2 trails (routes that feed into Tier 1 trails) have the same specifications as Tier 1 trails without the landscaping to separate the shoulder from the trail. The system’s capillary routes, called Tier 3, tend to have gravel and “natural” surfaces. Tier 3 trails are designed to be 4 to 6 feet wide.
