Janus-faced Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the U.S. at 10,152 feet, remains a regal boom-bust town. Things are pretty quiet here. One attraction is its huge, gaudy Victorian historic district. Another is the legacy of ore diva Baby Jane Tabor, who tended the Matchless Mine until she froze to death in a tiny cabin next to the mine in 1935. Some of Leadville's sights are as mesmerizing as a train wreck. Sickly yellow tailings piles, collapsing shafts, and rusted headframes poking up on corners in town are mere prologue to the area's human-caused landscape devastation, where mining had filed down entire mountains. This ride (based on a popular citizens' race held in August) takes advantage of Leadville's other face: a peerless natural setting, best seen by heading west around Turquoise Lake. You can enjoy views of a wilderness area and the state's highest peaks in the Sawatch Range. Beware the weather: locals wouldn't blink at a July Fourth blizzard. Surface: paved roads. Things to See: historic mining town, Mount Massive, Mount Elbert, Turquoise Lake.
