The town of Steamboat with its 6,000 year-round residents at about 6,600 feet in elevation sits in a valley ringed by 12,000-foot mountains. There's more to Steamboat than ski lift lines and champagne powder. The summer climate is ideal for exploring the flat Yampa Valley by bike. Most of it is quiet ranch country. You can dip in the river. Skies tend toward the opalescent; the smells of sun-baked pine and sage fill the air. More than 150 medicinal hot springs await fatigued cyclists, and a few are still public. There are also weekend rodeos in the summer and a vintage sports-car race over Labor Day. Shops renting mountain bikes provide passage to the million-acre Routt National Forest. Surface: paved bike path and dirt road. Things to See: historic town with hot springs, quiet section of Yampa River, wetlands, mountain views.
