Durango is one of several towns in our bike-friendly state that can fairly lay claim to the title “Mountain-Bike Capital of...” The nearby San Juans (formed by volcanoes and perhaps the state's most striking range) are full of dirt roads and single-track trails. In the road-bike department, Durango also hosts the largest, oldest race in Colorado. Every Memorial Day weekend, some 2,000 roadies dash against a steam train (see below) for 47 miles to see who can reach Silverton first. The overall elevation gain exceeds 6,000 feet. Durango sits at 6,500 feet within the red sandstone bluffs of the Animas River Valley. The area is officially semiarid, yet it's greener than other parts of Colorado because of warmer weather and a rain dividend from San Juans. A magnet for Texans seeking cooler climes in summer, the area is also the gateway to Mesa Verde National Park. Durango retains much of its railroad feel, the puff of coal-fired trains is constantly evident over Durango's historic downtown. Surface: 2-lane blacktop, city roads, a bit of 4-lane with shoulder. Things to See: hot springs, historic railroad town, open country.
