The Black Canyon is the Rockies in reverse. Buried among endless, spare mesas, the canyon is a scenic surprise that guards its secrets until you practically fall into them. This mist-shrouded 12-mile stretch of the canyon is also largely protected as a wilderness area, rich with bird and bear. The river drops 95 feet per mile, making it one of the fastest and most treacherous waterways in America. Cyclists can make the trip much more easily on smooth rim roads. The route follows the standard driving tour, but it's much better done on a bike. However, the lack of shoulders should make you think twice before taking kids along. Surface: narrow, paved 2-lane road. Things to See: views of canyon that's 1/2 mile deep but only 40 feet wide in places.
